Social Media Marketing Tips: Dispelling the Myths

There are 5 misconceptions about social media that we deal with frequently with our clients, so let’s take a look:

  1. Social media cannot be used in my industry. That’s mostly not true, but there is the rare exception — some businesses regulated by the SEC, for instance.
  2. My business is too boring to be good at using social media. Our clients represent a wide spectrum of industries, and yes, you have to look far and wide to find people who would consider some of them interesting or sexy. But here’s the deal. The point of social media for local businesses is to generate leads and help establish business relationships. It doesn’t have to be sexy as long as you can demonstrate the benefit of what you offer.
  3. Success is measured by quantity (of blog comments, Twitter followers — you name it). Nope. Real success is measured in the number of quality leads and customers you generate…and retain.
  4. I must have a presence on every single social media network. This is so not true. Different social media networks are good for different kinds of interactions. You should choose the network(s) that best fit your business needs.
  5. I don’t have time for social media. Sure you do. Done correctly; it will only take about 15-20 minutes out of your day.
